Backup Planning The spread of Wi-Fi internet connections throughout coffee shops, airport lounges and other public spaces has been both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, we now have more flexibility to do work on the go and access information when before we had to make do without. Yet they also pose a security threat to our laptops as they provide hackers with a potential gateway to our sensitive information when we use these networks.
Wi-Fi security breaches are just one of the many hazards we business travellers face when on the road. However, there are a number of measures we can take to ensure our data (and our laptops) remain safe, including:
Turn off Bluetooth and other wireless connections when not in use – hackers can gain access through these unattended connections
Encrypt your data – perform data backup by storing information on an encrypted disc; this can save almost 40% on the average cost of losing your laptop, should the worst happen
Backup data – this will save you both time and money if you have to find a replacement machine
Install an anti-glare shield on your laptop screen – this prevents anyone not sat face-to-face on the screen from seeing what’s on your laptop
According to a study recently released by the Ponemon Institute, the average cost of a lost laptop is $49,246 (£30,075), so its important businesses educate their staff to be vigilant. Follow the above precautions and enjoy working as you travel safely.
